2 Coronet
The soft band where skin meets horn at the top of the hoof, where new hoof wall is formed.
Where is it?
The hairline around the top edge of the hoof, between the leg's coat and the hard wall.
What does it do?
Tissue in the coronet divides and forms the horn tubules that grow down as the hoof wall. Damage here can disturb wall growth for a long time.
What to look for
A slightly raised, hairy band that feels supple. Heat, swelling or a wound on the coronet deserves a professional's attention.
