Farrier: The trained professional who trims hooves, fits shoes and maintains hoof balance.

What it is for

The farrier keeps the hooves balanced, removes excess horn and fits shoes when needed. Shod horses are usually seen every four to six weeks, barefoot horses usually every six to ten weeks.

More detail

In many countries farriery is a protected or certified trade with several years of training. A good farrier works together with the owner and, when there are problems, with the vet. Regular trimming on a fixed schedule prevents many hoof problems.
