How to recognise it
- Sudden, often severe lameness, sometimes appearing overnight.
- Heat in the hoof and a stronger-than-normal pulse above it.
- Tenderness over one spot of the sole or white line.
- Sometimes swelling higher up the leg or pus breaking out at the coronet.
How urgent
A hoof abscess is usually not life-threatening, but it is very painful. Opening and draining it belongs to the vet or farrier; cutting in the wrong way can damage healthy tissue and make things worse.
Do not do yourself
- Do not cut into the sole or hoof yourself with a knife to open the abscess.
- Do not keep working the horse or riding it while it is in pain.
- Do not push strong chemicals or sharp objects into the hoof without advice.
When to call a professional
Let the vet or farrier locate the abscess and drain it safely. They will advise on bandaging, soaking and rest; follow that advice and keep the hoof clean and dry.
