8 Hoof mechanism
The slight expansion and contraction of the hoof with every step, which absorbs shock and helps circulation.
Where is it?
Throughout the whole hoof, above all in the rear half with the frog, heel bulbs and digital cushion.
What does it do?
As the horse lands, weight drops in, the back of the hoof briefly widens and the digital cushion is squeezed. That pushes blood out of the hoof and back up the leg, so the hoof acts as an extra pump for circulation. Movement keeps this mechanism working.
What to look for
Not visible to the naked eye; you mostly notice its importance in how regular movement supports healthy feet.
