4 Frog
The V-shaped, rubbery wedge on the underside of the hoof that absorbs shock and gives grip.
Where is it?
In the centre-rear of the underside of the hoof, point toward the toe and broad end toward the heels.
What does it do?
The frog cushions the impact of landing and helps with grip. Together with the heel bulbs it plays a part in the hoof mechanism that pumps blood back up the leg.
What to look for
Firm but flexible, with a groove down the middle and one on each side. A strong rotten smell or black gunge can point to thrush.
