Fetlock boots

What is it for?

They protect the fetlock joint from knocks and strikes, and are the hind-leg counterpart of tendon boots.

How is it made?

Shorter and lighter than brushing boots, specially shaped around the fetlock. They can be open at the front or fasten like brushing boots.

When do you use it?

Usually on the hind legs for schooling and jumping, often together with tendon boots on the front legs.

What to watch for in the fit

• The boot should sit over the fetlock without rubbing.

• Snug so it does not rotate or slip down.

• Check that it matches the tendon boots if you use them together.

Take care

Fetlock boots are often worn as the hind-leg partner to front tendon boots. Here too: use them only when needed and cool the legs after work.

What is it confused with?

• Tendon boots

  Tendon boots belong on the front legs; fetlock boots are the shorter hind-leg version.

• Jumping boots (springschoenen)

  In some shops fetlock boots are sold under the loose label springschoenen.
