Over-reach boots

What is it for?

They protect the heel and coronet of the front foot from over-reaching, where the hind hoof strikes the bulb of the front foot, and help prevent the horse pulling off a front shoe.

How is it made?

A bell-shaped boot of rubber or neoprene that fits over the hoof and pastern, either pull-on or with Velcro.

When do you use it?

On the front feet during work and in the field, especially for horses that over-reach, young or unbalanced horses and horses with a certain conformation.

What to watch for in the fit

• The bell should cover the heels and coronet.

• Make sure the edge does not rub against the coronet.

• Choose a size that fits over the hoof without pinching.

Take care

Over-reach boots and bell boots are the same thing. Make sure they fit well, as a rubbing edge at the coronet quickly causes sores.

What is it confused with?

• Jumping boots (springschoenen)

  In some shops hoof protection such as bell boots falls under the loose label springschoenen.
