Rug fit and rubbing

A well-fitting rug protects; a poorly fitting rug can rub and cause sores.

Rug fit and rubbing: A well-fitting rug protects; a poorly fitting rug can rub and cause sores.

What is it for?

The right fit lets a rug protect without pinching or rubbing, especially at the shoulder, withers and chest.

How is it made?

You measure with a soft tape from the centre of the chest, around the widest part of the shoulder and along the side to the point of the buttock, then compare with the brand's size guide. Sizing varies by brand.

When do you use it?

With every new rug and at every daily removal you check the fit and the skin underneath.

What to watch for in the fit

  • Measure from the centre of the chest to the point of the buttock and follow the brand's size guide.

  • Check the shoulder, withers and chest especially, as a rug rubs there first.

  • Remove the rug daily and see whether the skin is warm, damp or rubbed.

Take care

A poorly fitting rug, or one left on too long, can cause injury, for example on the withers. Make sure the rug sits straight and is secure but not too tight.
