Waterproof versus showerproof
Waterproof keeps off sustained rain; showerproof lets light showers bead off but soaks through in heavy rain.
What is it for?
The distinction helps you choose: a showerproof rug is enough for short showers, a truly waterproof rug for long, wet days.
How is it made?
True waterproofing comes from a coating or membrane with pores smaller than water droplets but larger than water vapour, so sweat can still get out. A water-repellent finish makes water bead off but saturates in sustained rain. Denier measures the strength of the fabric, not the waterproofing.
When do you use it?
Choose showerproof for light showers and waterproof for outdoor use in sustained rain.
What to watch for in the fit
Look at the combination of waterproof and breathable, so sweat can get out.
A higher denier is tougher, but not automatically more waterproof.
When a fabric saturates (wets out), its breathability drops.
Take care
In sustained rain a showerproof rug can soak through, after which condensation forms under the rug and the horse chills faster. The membrane and coating detail comes from manufacturer information.
What is it confused with?
- Rug weights and grams of fill
Waterproofing is about the outer fabric; grams of fill is about warmth. A rug can be waterproof and still give little warmth.
