Dandy brush
A dandy brush (hard brush) has long, stiff bristles to sweep away loose dirt and mud.
What is it for?
It sweeps away the dirt, dust and dead hair that the curry comb has loosened.
Where on the horse?
On the large muscle areas of the neck, back and hindquarters; usually not on the face or other sensitive spots.
How do you use it?
With short, flicking strokes in the direction of the hair you flick the dirt off the coat.
What to watch for
The stiff bristles feel rough, so many horses tolerate it mainly on the muscled areas and less on the legs, face or clipped skin; this varies by horse.
Role in the grooming session
The step after the curry comb, to remove the loosened dirt.
