What is it for?

It loosens dirt and dead hair while massaging the skin, which supports circulation and the spread of natural oils.

Where on the horse?

Mainly on the large muscled areas such as the neck, shoulder, chest, barrel and hindquarters; less suited to bony or sensitive spots.

How do you use it?

You move it in small circles with light to firm pressure, adjusted to what the horse enjoys.

What to watch for

Many guides advise not working straight over bone and adjusting pressure to each horse; thin skin or a sensitive horse may tolerate it less well.

Role in the grooming session

Usually one of the first steps, to bring dirt to the surface before you brush.
