Bandage pads: Bandage pads are the padded underlayer that goes beneath a bandage.

What is it for?

They spread the pressure of the bandage evenly over the leg and so protect the tendons from too much local pressure.

How is it made?

Quilted cotton, fleece or foam pads, usually at least a centimetre or more thick, that lie flat against the leg.

When do you use it?

Under stable bandages and under exercise bandages, applied flat and wrinkle-free before the bandage goes over them.

What to watch for in the fit

  • Lay the pad completely flat against the skin, without folds.

  • Let the end usually finish on the outside of the leg.

  • Make sure the bandage does not extend beyond the pad.

Take care

A pad is not optional: it protects the tendons from the concentrated pressure of the bandage. A bandage without enough even padding is a major cause of tendon injury.

What is it confused with?

  • Bandages

The bandage is the outer wrap; the bandage pads are the padded layer beneath it.
