Fly rug
A fly rug is a light, fine-mesh rug against biting insects.
What is it for?
The fly rug protects against flies and midges in the insect season by covering as much skin as possible.
How is it made?
Fine, air-permeable mesh that lets air through but keeps insects out. Often with a neck cover, belly flap and an attachment for a fly mask. Zebra print can confuse flies and reduce bites.
When do you use it?
In the field in spring, summer and sometimes autumn, when insects are active.
What to watch for in the fit
Choose a model that covers as much skin as possible for the best protection.
Watch for rubbing from a light, airy fabric that moves a lot.
Check that the rug does not snag in the field.
Take care
A standard fly rug is not always enough for a horse with sweet itch; that needs a special, closer-fitting sweet-itch rug.
