Sweet-itch rug
A sweet-itch rug is a fine, close-fitting rug for horses with summer eczema.
What is it for?
The sweet-itch rug limits contact with midges (Culicoides) by covering as much skin as possible, as part of managing sweet itch.
How is it made?
A fine-mesh rug that fits closely and usually covers the belly, neck, mane and tail base, the places midges bite most. Often combined with a mask.
When do you use it?
From spring to autumn, when midges are active, together with other measures such as shelter around dusk and fine mesh over stable openings.
What to watch for in the fit
Choose a rug that fits closely around belly, neck and tail without pinching.
Make sure the mane, withers and tail base are really covered, as these are the risk areas.
Check daily for rubbing, as the rug sits close to the skin.
Take care
Sweet itch cannot be cured, only managed, and it resembles other skin conditions. Have the diagnosis and approach guided by a vet.
What is it confused with?
- Fly rug
A standard fly rug covers less and fits more loosely; the sweet-itch rug is made specially for horses that are hypersensitive to midges.
