Rain sheet
A rain sheet is a waterproof outdoor rug with no or very little fill.
What is it for?
The rain sheet keeps off rain and wind without adding warmth, for a horse that needs to stay dry but does not need insulation.
How is it made?
A waterproof, breathable outer with 0 grams of fill. The strength of the outer fabric is given in denier; a higher denier is tougher and more water-resistant.
When do you use it?
Outdoors in light or short showers, or to keep a horse clean and dry. In prolonged, heavy rain water can eventually seep through.
What to watch for in the fit
Fasten with chest, belly and leg straps so the rug does not shift.
Check for rubbing around the shoulder, withers and chest.
Make sure the rug is long enough to keep the flanks covered.
Take care
A rain sheet with no fill gives little warmth. In sustained rain water can seep through, after which condensation forms under the rug and the horse chills more quickly.
What is it confused with?
- Turnout rug
The turnout rug is also waterproof, but has fill for warmth. The difference is the fill, not the waterproofing.
- Stable rug
The stable rug looks like a rain sheet but is not waterproof and belongs indoors.
