Neck cover: A neck cover is the neck and poll section that gives a rug extra coverage.

What is it for?

The neck cover covers the neck so a horse that needs more coverage is protected there too against cold, wet or insects.

How is it made?

A built-in or removable neck section that matches the rug. It exists on turnout, stable and fly rugs.

When do you use it?

Added to a rug in cold or wet weather, or to a fly rug against insects on the neck.

What to watch for in the fit

  • Make sure the neck cover meets the rug without a gap where wet or insects get in.

  • Watch for rubbing on the neck and at the withers.

  • Choose the right length so the neck piece does not pinch or slip back.

Take care

On horses with thick manes a neck cover can cause overheating or irritation. Check the neck regularly.
