Under-rug or liner
An under-rug is an extra insulating layer worn beneath an outdoor or stable rug.
What is it for?
The under-rug makes a rug system flexible: with one outer rug and different under-rugs you adjust the total warmth without owning many separate rugs.
How is it made?
A filled layer, often 50 to 300g, that clips to the outer rug so it does not shift. The trapped air between layers adds warmth, and the fills roughly add up.
When do you use it?
Under a turnout or stable rug when you want to adjust the warmth without buying a thicker rug.
What to watch for in the fit
Use a compatible, clip-in system so the layers do not shift and rub.
Roughly add the fills: a 100g rug with a 300g under-rug gives about 400g.
A thin, washable under-rug against the skin is more hygienic.

Loose, ill-fitting layers can shift and cause rubs. This is practical guidance from manufacturers, not a welfare-body rule.

A thin stable rug is sometimes used as an under-rug, but a true under-rug is made to clip beneath another rug.
