Correct tying keeps the horse safe without taking away the freedom to move its head.

Do not tie too short, because the horse needs to lower its head to clear its airways. Use a breakable link or safety knot so the connection gives way if the horse panics and pulls. Never tie to a loose part, and never leave a horse tied unattended in an open trailer.
