What you see

The lips are tight or pinched, the chin may bunch up and the nostrils draw long. The chewing muscles are visibly tense.

What it can mean

  • Tension, stress or concentration in a difficult situation.
  • Discomfort or pain: a tight mouth, tense nostrils and a drawn-up chin are among the validated pain-face features.
  • Under saddle, a tight mouth can belong with bit discomfort or over-strong aids.

What this does not prove

A tense mouth does not automatically prove pain, nor that the horse is being difficult. It is a tension signal you must read together with the rest of the face and the situation.

Read the combination and the context

Look at the eye area (tight or showing white), the position of the ears and the nostrils. Several tense facial parts together weigh more than a tight mouth alone.

When to seek help

A persistently tense mouth together with other pain-face features, or one that appears at saddling or riding, should be assessed by a vet.
